Credibility
How people on this forum establish that they really farm — and what that implies for verifying them on a platform.
The community already polices this itself. It has a word for the failure mode — an "internet farmer", someone who advises without farming — and 3904 threads carry signals of people proving they are not one.
But almost everything they offer is unverifiable by a machine. The commonest proofs are a location, a phone number and a claim of years farming. Only two families could be checked automatically: a registered business name, and membership of a named association.
What people offer as proof
| family | threads | verifiable? | |
|---|---|---|---|
| A place you could go A stated address, farm location or farm size. Strong, because it is falsifiable by anyone nearby and expensive to fake convincingly. |
1792 | claim only | |
| Reachability A phone number, WhatsApp line or email. The commonest signal by far, and the weakest: it proves someone can be contacted, not that they farm. |
1703 | claim only | |
| A named business A company, brand or vendor name, or a website. Checkable against corporate registration, which makes it one of the few signals a platform could verify automatically. |
1340 | machine-checkable | |
| Claimed experience Years farming, or a first-person account of having done it. Entirely unverifiable, and the single most common thing people offer. |
813 | claim only | |
| Knowing the details Technical or product specifics -- breeds, varieties, feed ratios, process steps. Not a credential, but hard to fake without knowing the work, and the signal the community itself trusts most. |
799 | claim only | |
| Photographs Pictures or video of the farm, birds or crop. Persuasive on the forum and trivially stolen from elsewhere. |
334 | claim only | |
| Association membership Naming a cooperative, society or farmers' association. Verifiable in principle through the association itself, and the closest thing the forum has to an institutional check. |
264 | machine-checkable |
What this means for a verification check mark
The founding meeting proposed that anyone may self-declare as a farmer, with a separate reviewable form granting a check mark, and asked what proof signals could make that review automatable. This corpus answers it, mostly in the negative:
- A named business is the strongest automatable signal. It can be checked against corporate registration without a human reading anything.
- Association membership is the strongest institutional one — verifiable through the association itself, and the meeting already identified associations as the batch-onboarding channel. It is also the rarest thing people offer here (264 threads), which suggests asking for it will exclude many real farmers.
- A phone number proves nothing and is the second most common offering. Requiring one filters nobody.
- Location and farm size are the most common proofs of all, and they are falsifiable by neighbours rather than by a server — which points at community verification rather than document review.
- Photographs are persuasive here and trivially stolen. Treat them as presentation, not evidence.
Farmers have already built the missing piece themselves. Among the coordination threads is one collecting verified contact details specifically to defend against scams — a hand-rolled registry of people vouched for as real. See the registries → That is the check mark, existing as folk practice, and it exists because being sold something fake and being defrauded are the two most reported harms in this corpus.
What no family matched
The most common of the 4803 unmatched signals. Several are real credibility markers the taxonomy simply does not name — "professional tone", "citing external sources" — and a few are the model editorialising.
